It is an art, which can be learnt by anyone. Stained glass art involves cutting of glass, copper foiling edges and joining the multi-hued glass pieces through soldering,” says Shubbir Vaid, who teaches authentic stained glass painting in Mumbai. Finally the copper foiling and soldering is done by the tiffany method. It is then grounded to fit with each other without any gaps in between. “Authentic stained glass is created by cutting different types of tinted glass as per the design. “An outline of the design in made and then stained glass paint (which is self spreading) is applied in between the outline,” she adds.
“It can be used for indoor as well as outdoor projects like door panels, window panels, ceiling panels and more.” In stained glass paintings, transparent glass colours are used to stain different kinds of glass - like textured, frosted or clear glass. “Stained glass art is made by using coloured glass pieces and soldering them together to form a design or pattern,” explains Naifisa Vaid, who teaches stained glass painting. Though stained glass is more used in flat panels and windowpanes usually, it can also be used to make three-dimensional structures and sculpture. Stained glass has a thousand year old history and is known for its usage in various gothic structures traditionally. We have all seen coloured glass in the windows of churches, cathedrals, chapels, and other significant buildings.
